Britten Farms is a nonprofit horse rescue. It is our goal to provide a safe home for abused and unwanted horse(s). We have been open a year 1/2. We get calls often wanting us to take more horses. Currently, we have thirteen horses that we are looking after. Out of the thirteen, eleven of them have to stay because of various reasons given by the surrender or other reasons. As a nonprofit, we rely on generous donors to help provide the horses a safe home to live at. The horses are in need of a barn. Our horses have one hundred-acres to roam free on. But we have no shelters. Lack of shelter during rainy days is hard on the horses. It causes them to be susceptible to dieses such as Rain Rot. Rain Rot, also known as Rain Scald, is a bacterial infection called Dermatophiluscongolenes. It occurs during warm, wet weather. The bacterium multiplies and irritates and infects the horse’s skin hair follicles. The follicle eventually dies and the hair falls out. The area then becomes scabby or open sores. The horse must be treated at this point or it can cause more health issues. If we had a dry place for them to stay, rain rot could be prevented. The snow and cold weather is hard on horses too. The average age of our horses is around 10 years. Horses are born with the ability to keep themselves warm during cold weather. That system is weakened if the horse is a foal, a senior horse, has health issues or has been abuse. The horse’s immune system does not function properly. This compromise immune system causes horses to be susceptible to infection and to hypothermia. Half of our horses fit these criteria. Also, the cold affects their joints. This can cause a horse’s health to decline because they cannot get up to eat or drink properly. Even if you bring the food and water to them, most horses have to be euthanized. We at Britten Farms appreciate you taking the time to consider funding the needs of the horses. With your help, we can provide them with a dry place to abide in during inclement weather.
Thank You,
